Blending Speeds

Gurit have a range of solvent free epoxy laminating and coating products, and each of these products has a range of hardener speeds. This allow the applicator to select the appropriate gel/cure time for their application, and the conditions they are working under.

But what if the slow will take too long and the fast will not give you enough time?

The Answer - blend the hardeners

This allows you to have ultimate control over the gel-time, working time or cure time you require.

As with all things this is not quite as simple as it wold first appear due to the exothermic properties of solvent free epoxy systems – but we can help you with this.  Epoxies as they cure generate heat as the resin and hardener chemistry polymerise, that is go hard. The greater percentage of Fast hardener the more this is going to be noticeable, and as the heat generated makes the epoxy cure faster it will go faster still.

But with a little trial and error – or better speaking to us – we can help you with the blend ratios just right for you.

Points to remember, only use hardeners from within the same system for example Ampreg 21 Standard blend with Ampreg 21 Slow. And always add the correct ratio of resin to blended hardeners by weight as the mix ratio by volume can be different as in the example below.

Prime 27 - Premium Epoxy Infusion System now the new standard

Following on from the popularity of the Prime 20 Infusion system Gurit have introduced a premium syste for large complex structure and tooling.

  • The lowest viscosity PRIME™ infusion resin

  • Suitable for infusing structures that utilise carbon, aramid and glass fibres

  • Very low exotherm in thick sections

  • Germanischer Lloyd approved

PRIME™ 27 is suitable for the female moulding of large, complex components incorporating advanced fibres such as carbon and aramid*. Typical projects include spars, hulls and reinforcing structures.

PRIME™ 27 offers outstanding performance in a variety of liquid infusion processes including SCRIMP™, RIFT(resin infusion under flexible tooling), VARTM (vacuum assisted resin transfer moulding) and RTM (resin transfer moulding).

It is Gurit’s premium infusion system, offering high mechanical and thermal properties, lower viscosity, improved wetting out and longer working time than PRIME™ 20LV. It achieves excellent mechanical and physical properties, including a high Tg from a moderate (50°C) postcure.

PRIME™ 27 resin uses PRIME™ 20 hardeners to give a range of working times and cure speeds. This enables the gel time of the resin to be closely matched to the required infusion time for any particular size of moulded part.

The system has an exceptionally low exotherm characteristic, which allows thick sections to be manufactured without risk of premature gelation due to exothermic heat build-up. This low exotherm will also extend the life of mould tools.

All the above properties make PRIME™ 27 a useful product for the infusion of large complex mouldings utilising "higher end" reinforcement fibres such as carbon.

*Unidirectional carbon fibre is acknowledged as difficult to infuse. Please contact a member of our technical team before attempting a carbon infusion with PRIME™ 27
